We sailed to Kyoto, Nagasaki, Tokyo, Shimizu (and more), and even made a stop in Busan, South Korea. Cruising is such a great way to see a country like Japan — you unpack once, enjoy the comfort of the ship, and wake up somewhere new every day. It’s the perfect way to sample a variety of cities and decide which ones you’d love to come back to for a longer stay.

Shimizu-was a favorite of ours and yet a destination we were not familiar with. Another reason to stay open minded and choose a cruise to guide you.

The highlights? Definitely the sushi (even convenience store sushi was amazing), the kind and gracious people, and the stunning scenery. Kyoto’s temples, Tokyo’s energy, and Nagasaki’s history all left lasting impressions. Busan added a wonderful mix of beaches, skincare shopping-really the skin care and makeup quality is incredible and so affordable.

Of course, there are a few limitations with cruising — you often don’t get as much time in each city as you’d like. But it’s a wonderful way to get a taste of Japan — literally and figuratively.

A few travel tips if you’re considering Japan by cruise:

  • Be ready for crowds in popular spots, especially in Tokyo and Kyoto.

  • Download a translation app. English isn’t widely spoken, but people are incredibly kind and patient.

  • Go with the flow. Sometimes the best memories come from wandering side streets or chatting with locals.

Japan truly offers something for everyone — tradition and technology, calm and chaos, sushi and serenity. I can’t wait to return… and next time, I just might stay a little longer in each city. 🍣✨

Does Japan interest you?
