Traveling solo isn’t about being alone—it’s about opening the door to experiences you might never have had otherwise. It is one of the reasons I became a travel agent. More and more women, especially women over 50, are embracing the freedom and self-confidence that comes with setting out on their own.

Whether it’s joining a small group tour, exploring the world by sea, or enjoying a tailor-made private adventure, solo travel is having its moment—and it’s here to stay.

Why Solo Travel Works So Well for Women Over 50

At this stage in life, many of us are ready for a trip that’s entirely about us. We’re seasoned enough to know what we like, open to trying something new, and wise enough to value connection with like-minded travelers. Solo travel offers the flexibility to do exactly what you want while also giving you opportunities to meet others along the way.

Small-Group Travel: Solo But Never Alone

Joining a small group tour is one of the best ways to enjoy the freedom of solo travel without feeling isolated. The groups are typically intimate—10 to 24 travelers—so you can truly get to know your fellow adventurers.

Small groups often attract a healthy mix of couples, friends, and solo travelers, making it easy to find conversation partners and new travel buddies to explore on your current trip or plan a future trip together.

My Croatia Private Yacht Experience

One of my favorite solo-friendly adventures was a week on a private yacht in Croatia.

While it was a private charter, it felt like the best of both worlds: I had my own space and freedom, yet I was sharing the journey with a small group of like-minded travelers (who live locally and that I get together with post trip).

Days were filled with swimming in crystal-clear waters, wandering through centuries-old streets, and laughing over fresh seafood dinners. Some activities we did as a group and some we did separately.

The Rise of Solo Cruising

Cruise lines have caught on to the fact that more women are traveling solo, and many have introduced cabins designed just for one. This means no hefty “single supplement” fee and a space that’s perfectly tailored for one traveler.

River cruises, ocean voyages, and even expedition cruises are seeing a steady increase in solo passengers—especially women over 50 who love the idea of unpacking once and letting the destinations come to them. Onboard activities, dining tables for solos, and curated shore excursions make it easy to connect when you want to, yet you still have the option of enjoying peaceful moments all to yourself.

Final Thoughts

Solo travel can be empowering, rejuvenating, and incredibly fun. Whether you’re sailing along Croatia’s sun-kissed coast, joining a small group tour through a country you’ve always dreamed of visiting, or booking a solo-friendly cruise, you’ll return home with more than just photographs—you’ll have memories, new friends, and the satisfaction of knowing you did it your way.

If you’ve been thinking about traveling solo, let's chat! We aren't getting any younger and now, today, is the time to live your best life.

Warmly,

Karen
