Why Everyone (Including Cruise Lines & Resorts) Is Loving Pickleball Travel

Somewhere between ordering a cocktail and figuring out what shoes to pack, pickleball became the unexpected travel companion. What started as a backyard sport has officially made its way onto cruise ships, into resorts, and across destinations worldwide.
Pickleball is easy to learn, wildly social, and one of the few activities where strangers become friends before you even know their last names-and bonus the paddle is easy to pack!
Cruise lines were quick to catch on: pickleball is fun, inclusive, and perfect for sea days. Many major lines now offer courts and casual games — but here’s the key: it’s ship-specific, so always check before you book.
Cruise lines embracing pickleball include:
Princess Cruise Line
Holland America
Royal Caribbean
Celebrity Cruises
Norwegian Cruise Line
Personal highlight: On my Japan sailing with Princess last year, pickleball ended up being one of my favorite parts of the trip. It was such an easy way to meet people, laugh a lot, and instantly feel connected — especially great if you’re traveling solo and don’t want to wait for friendships to “just happen.”
Hotels Are Playing Along
Pickleball has officially moved beyond cruise decks. More hotels are adding courts as part of their wellness and activity offerings — but just like cruising, this varies by property, not brand.
Translation: Always check the specific hotel before assuming it’s part of the stay.
All-Inclusives
Sun, warm breezes, casual games, and a drink waiting nearby — what’s not to love?
Resorts leaning into pickleball include:
Sandals Resorts
Beaches Resorts
Again, it’s destination-specific, so checking each resort is key — but when it’s available, it’s often built right into the daily activities and social scene.
Why Pickleball Just Works When You Travel
You don’t need to be “good” to play
It’s social without being awkward
You meet people naturally (no forced mixers)
Perfect for solo travelers
Easy to pop in for a game and still make dinner plans
