Staycation Travel Ideas-when you need a vacation but not a suitcase

Last year was full-on travel mode. Planes, packing cubes, airport lounges… This year looks a little different. I’m putting some serious love into the house, slowing things down a bit, and trading long trips for shorter, closer-to-home adventures.

I’ve realized something important: you don’t always need an overnight bag to feel like you’ve gotten away.

When I’m craving a reset but don’t have the time (or energy) for a full trip, I lean hard into staycation fun—and it’s become one of my favorite ways to recharge.

Of course, wine tasting is always an easy yes. But there are so many other options and I am sure some of my suggestions are available in your area too.

One of my favorite indulgences is a spa day at a local resort. No packing, just showing up and letting someone else handle everything for a few hours. A massage, a facial, maybe some time by the pool—it feels luxurious without the commitment of a full weekend away.

A food crawl instead of a single reservation. I love picking a neighborhood and trying lite bites at several new restaurants—an appetizer here, a shared plate there, and then a decadent dessert to finish it off.

Sometimes I will pick something that I loved to do when I was young. For me it's the San Francisco Zoo, Fishermans Wharf for a bowl of clam chowder, a bike ride through Sausalito, or even a walk across the Golden Gate Bridge.

Staycations have reminded me that feeling getaway-good isn’t about distance, it’s about intention. Whether it’s a spa robe, a wine glass, or a plate of something new and delicious, those small escapes add up—and right now, they fit perfectly into this season of life.

Sometimes the best trips are the ones that bring you right back home by dinner.
