The Joy of Meeting People on the Road: How Travel Connects Us

One of the things I love most about travel isn’t just the stunning views or delicious meals—it’s the people I meet along the way. Whether I’m on a small group tour or simply lingering over a cappuccino in a tucked-away café, there’s always the chance for connection.
As a woman in her 60s, I’ve found that travel in this chapter of life comes with a certain confidence. I’m more open to conversation, more curious about others’ stories, and more likely to say “yes” to that shared table at lunch.
Pictured are two friends I met on my recent yacht trip to Croatia. They happen to live in the Bay Area and our friendship has continued to blossom.
If you’re thinking about traveling—whether solo or with a group—don’t underestimate the friendships that can bloom when you’re outside your usual routine. Group travel, especially those designed for women over 50, is a great way to explore safely while opening the door to kindred spirits. But even unstructured moments—a smile in a market, asking someone what they ordered—can lead to a story worth remembering.
Travel reminds me that people everywhere are more alike than different. And for those of us embracing travel in midlife and beyond, there’s so much joy in making new friends—one shared experience at a time.
Hugs,
Karen
