Choosing the right cruise: start with where you want to go

When people start planning a cruise, they often get pulled into comparing cruise lines, ship ratings, dining options, and onboard luxury. And while those things absolutely matter, they shouldn’t be the starting point.

The truth is simple:The best cruise for you begins with the destination—not the ship.

Start with Your “Why”

Before you even look at cruise lines, ask yourself:

  • Do I want to relax on a beach with a drink in hand?

  • Explore historic cities and culture?

  • See glaciers, wildlife, or something completely new?

  • Travel with family and keep everyone entertained?

For many travelers, choosing the destination first leads to a much more satisfying experience. In fact, travel experts consistently note that for most cruisers, the decision process begins with where they want to go, and only then shifts to which cruise line can take them there.

A Common Mistake

One of the biggest mistakes travelers make is choosing a cruise based on:

  • Ratings

  • Luxury level

  • Social media buzz

…and then realizing they’re not excited about the actual ports.

You can have a beautiful ship, incredible food, and five-star service—but if the itinerary doesn’t inspire you, the experience can fall flat.

The Bottom Line

A cruise is one of the most efficient and enjoyable ways to see multiple destinations in one trip. It allows you to unpack once and experience a variety of places—sometimes ones you never would have considered .

So when planning your next cruise, flip the script:

👉 Start with the destination

👉 Define your travel style

👉 Then choose the cruise line that fits

Because at the end of the day, the memories you’ll talk about most won’t be the buffet or the balcony…

They’ll be the places you discovered along the way.
