It wasn’t a decision I made lightly, but it was one I made passionately. After decades in another profession (and life filled with responsibilities, deadlines, and routine), I realized what had always lit me up most: travel. For you it may be home decorating, becoming a nurse or teacher, small business owner. Whatever it is-follow your passion, do your research and do it.
At 50+, I had more life experience, more confidence, and a stronger sense of what really mattered to me. I wanted to spend my time doing something joyful, something that made other people’s lives richer. Travel checked all the boxes.
The Perks of Starting at 50+
Changing careers later in life comes with advantages you might not expect. Here are a few I’ve discovered:
Life skills matter. Negotiation, time management, emotional intelligence—these aren’t just buzzwords; they’re the foundation of great travel planning.
You know your people. I understand what women 50+ want in a trip because I am one. I know what makes a hotel truly comfortable, what kind of pace feels good, and how important those little moments of luxury can be.
Freedom and flexibility. As an entrepreneur, I set my own schedule, work with people I enjoy, and build a business around my strengths. It’s empowering and energizing.
It’s never too late. There’s something deeply satisfying about proving to yourself that you can still learn, grow, and create something meaningful—at any age.
If You’re Thinking About a Career Pivot…
Don’t let fear or “what ifs” hold you back. Reinvention doesn’t have an expiration date. If you’re passionate about something, there’s a way to bring it into your life more fully.
