Why I changed careers at 50+ and became a travel agent

It wasn’t a decision I made lightly, but it was one I made passionately. After decades in another profession (and life filled with responsibilities, deadlines, and routine), I realized what had always lit me up most: travel. For you it may be home decorating, becoming a nurse or teacher, small business owner. Whatever it is-follow your passion, do your research and do it.

At 50+, I had more life experience, more confidence, and a stronger sense of what really mattered to me. I wanted to spend my time doing something joyful, something that made other people’s lives richer. Travel checked all the boxes.

The Perks of Starting at 50+

Changing careers later in life comes with advantages you might not expect. Here are a few I’ve discovered:

  • Life skills matter. Negotiation, time management, emotional intelligence—these aren’t just buzzwords; they’re the foundation of great travel planning.

  • You know your people. I understand what women 50+ want in a trip because I am one. I know what makes a hotel truly comfortable, what kind of pace feels good, and how important those little moments of luxury can be.

  • Freedom and flexibility. As an entrepreneur, I set my own schedule, work with people I enjoy, and build a business around my strengths. It’s empowering and energizing.

  • It’s never too late. There’s something deeply satisfying about proving to yourself that you can still learn, grow, and create something meaningful—at any age.

If You’re Thinking About a Career Pivot…

Don’t let fear or “what ifs” hold you back. Reinvention doesn’t have an expiration date. If you’re passionate about something, there’s a way to bring it into your life more fully.
