Traveling alone can be one of the most empowering and enriching experiences, especially for women over 50. Europe, with its diverse cultures, historical sites, and world-class cuisine, is a fantastic destination for solo female travelers. However, staying safe should always be a top priority.

Research your destination: before you go, familiarize yourself with the local customs, laws, and cultural norms of each country you plan to visit. Understanding safe neighborhoods, public transportation options, and common scams will help you feel more confident and prepared.

Choose accommodations wisely: opt for well-reviewed hotels, boutique inns, or vacation rentals in safe, central areas. Look for places with 24-hour front desk service and strong security measures. Staying in a well-lit and busy area can help you feel more secure when coming back late at night.

Trust your instincts: if a situation doesn’t feel right, remove yourself from it. Be aware of your surroundings and trust your gut if something seems off. Avoid overly friendly strangers who seem too eager to offer help or engage in conversation. This happened to me at the airport-overly friendly, wasting my time and trying to charge me double for a taxi.

Stay connected: make sure to have a local SIM card or an international phone plan to stay connected. Apps like Google Maps, WhatsApp, and Uber can be helpful for navigating new cities. Regularly check in with family or friends and be sure to share your itinerary with them.

Most of all have fun. These are suggestions for staying safe and in no way trying to discourage you from traveling. Solo travel in Europe as a woman over 50 can be a fulfilling and liberating experience. With the right precautions and a little planning, you can explore new destinations with confidence and peace of mind.

Enjoy friends,

Karen
