Sip Your Way Around the World: Cocktails & Wine by Destination

Post-pandemic, one of my most special trips was meeting my son in Barcelona. Somewhere between wandering the Gothic Quarter and lingering over late dinners, I was introduced to the espresso martini. Not exactly Spanish by origin—but somehow, in that moment, it became part of the experience. That’s the magic of travel… it’s not always about where something comes from, but where you discover it.
Since then, I’ve paid a little more attention to what each destination pours best. Because every place tells a story—through its cocktails, its wine, and its traditions.
Cuba: A Taste of Old Havana
A mojito in Havana just hits differently. Fresh mint, lime, and rum—simple, but unforgettable when enjoyed where it all began.
France: Effortless Elegance
In France, wine often takes center stage, but a French 75 (champagne, gin, lemon) is the perfect blend of sophistication and celebration. This is not my go to, but a dear friend swears by this sophisticated drink.
Hawaii: A Definite Favorite and a Family Tradition
In Hawaii, a classic mai tai is more than just a tropical cocktail—it’s sunshine, tradition, and for me, a reminder of the many family trips we took there year after year.
Italy: The Art of the Aperitivo
In Italy, it’s less about drinking and more about pausing. The iconic Aperol Spritz is light, refreshing, and meant to be enjoyed before dinner as the world slows down around you. Confession here-this has become a favorite of mine. In the US, abroad, anywhere.
Japan: Precision and Craft
In Japan, cocktail-making is elevated to an art form. A Japanese highball—whisky, soda, and perfect ice—is all about balance and precision.
And Then… Wine Country (Home)
Living and working in Sonoma County and near Napa Valley, I would be remiss not to mention that sometimes the best “cocktail” is simply a beautiful glass of wine.
Whether it’s a crisp Sauvignon Blanc on a warm afternoon or a bold Cabernet at sunset, wine here isn’t just a drink—it’s a lifestyle. It’s long lunches, scenic drives, and conversations that linger.
What I’ve come to love most is how a simple drink can take you right back to a place and a time.
That espresso martini in Barcelona? It’s not just a cocktail—it’s laughter, catching up with my son, and that feeling of finally traveling again.
And then there’s Hawaii—where my family traveled year after year. A mai tai there isn’t just a tropical drink, it’s tradition.
A glass of wine here in Sonoma County or Napa Valley? It’s home. It’s slowing down. It’s appreciating where we are.
