The Bay Area is a hiker’s paradise — from soaring redwoods to ocean bluffs and hidden creek-side canyons. Whether you’re seeking iconic panoramas or quieter paths away from the crowds, here are a few great hikes that showcase the diversity of Marin, Sonoma, and San Francisco — plus tips on when to choose a lesser-known trail over a famous one.
Armstrong Redwood Grove — Sonoma
Towering ancient redwoods, peaceful forest floor, and an easy loop perfect for all fitness levels. Ideal for families, photographers, anyone who wants a true redwood experience without the crowds.
Unlike Muir Woods in Marin County, Armstrong Redwoods rarely requires reservations and stays quiet even on sunny days. This is old-growth magic minus the selfie lines.
Matt Davis & Steep Ravine Loop — Marin
A quintessential Marin Coast trek with redwoods, ridge lines, ocean views, and ladder-stair descents to sandy coves. This is ideal for adventurous hikers who want variety — forest, fire road, seaside bluff, and beach.
Pro tip: Start at Stinson Beach for cooler morning air and fewer crowds at the trailhead.
Lands End Trail — San Francisco
Dramatic ocean views, historic ruins, and Golden Gate vistas without the crowds of Golden Gate Bridge viewpoints. Considered a moderate hike — close to the city yet still peaceful compared to Crissy Field or Baker Beach.
Bernal Heights Summit Loop — San Francisco
A short city hike with panoramic views of downtown, Twin Peaks, and the Bay. Locals know this spot, but many visitors miss it entirely. This is ideal for quick sunrise/sunset outings and visitors with limited time.
As an avid hiker, I’ve always loved discovering new trails and hearing which ones locals return to again and again. These are a few hikes I’m especially drawn to — some iconic, some quieter — all offering that perfect mix of fresh air, beautiful scenery, and a chance to unplug without going far.
