When we think of Europe, it’s easy to picture Paris (a favorite of mine), Rome, and London first. And while they are iconic for a reason, many travelers—especially those looking for a more relaxed vacation—are discovering Europe’s lesser-known destinations that still offer culture, beauty, and charm without the overwhelming crowds.

Here are a few suggestions to consider for your next European adventure.

Annecy, France

Often called the “Venice of the Alps,” Annecy is quietly becoming one of Europe’s most talked-about destinations — especially among travelers who want beauty, charm, and a slower pace without the crowds of Paris or the French Riviera.

Located near the Swiss border, this lakeside town blends alpine scenery, historic charm, and a relaxed elegance that feels both luxurious and peaceful. Annecy pairs beautifully with a Switzerland or Northern Italy itinerary

Bologna, Italy

Often overshadowed by Florence, Rome, and Venice, Bologna is quietly becoming one of Italy’s most beloved destinations for travelers who want authenticity without overwhelming crowds.

Known as the culinary capital of Italy, this elegant university city offers incredible food, beautiful architecture, and a wonderfully local atmosphere.

Ljubljana, Slovenia

Europe’s Most Charming Hidden Gem. Small, elegant, and incredibly picturesque, Ljubljana feels like a storybook city. It’s clean, safe, and filled with outdoor cafés and riverside strolls.

Perfect for women’s trips, couples, or anyone seeking a slower travel experience.

Porto, Portugal

While Lisbon gets most of the attention, Porto is quietly winning hearts with its riverfront charm, stunning architecture, and world-famous wine culture. Think cobblestone streets, scenic viewpoints, and cozy cafés overlooking the Douro River.

This destination is especially wonderful for travelers who want European charm without the fast pace.

As a travel advisor, I love recommending places that feel special, authentic, and just a little under the radar… And now that I am an empty nester I prefer to travel in the off seasons. Costs come down which allows for more trips throughout the year and I can avoid the crowds.
